Abstract
This study examined the effects of a behavioral activation intervention on negative mental health variables (depressive symptoms, rumination, and impairment in functioning) and positive mental health variables (positive emotion, value-consistent behaviors, and mental well-being) of subclinical undergraduate students with depression symptoms. Thirty-four subclinical undergraduate students with mild to moderate levels of depression symptoms were divided into two conditions, among which 17 from one condition completed the behavioral activation intervention and the other 17 were assigned to the non-treatment control condition. The behavioral activation intervention consisted of six semiweekly sessions. Compared to the participants in the non-treatment control condition, those in the behavioral activation intervention condition showed significant decreases in depression symptoms and impairment in daily functioning, as well as significant increases in positive emotion and mental well-being. However, there were no significant differences between the two conditions in rumination and value-consistent behaviors. In conclusion, these results suggest that the behavior activation intervention is an effective treatment for improving several mental health variables among subclinical undergraduate students with depression symptoms. Lastly, the limitations of this study and suggestions for further research, as well as its implications are discussed.
